Sightseeing hike to the holy mountain Hostýn 735 m above sea level

Starting point

We start from Bystřice pod Hostýnem. You can come here by train, bus or car. We left our car in the parking lot directly designated for tourists heading to Hostýn 735 m above sea level. The parking lot is paid (in 2025 it cost 100 CZK per day). The parking lot is right next to the red tourist sign that leads to the top of Hostýn.

Description of the hike

From the car park we follow the red hiking trail, it starts right by the park. The trail from the beginning leads a little bit in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, we go through the part of the town Vinohrádek, the trail still slightly rises.

After about 15 minutes we come to the forest, we follow the forest path, in places roots. The climb is still gentle and the going is good. After about half an hour we come to a well on the Císařská cesta.

At the holy picture below the Water Chapel we follow the red marker up a steeper hill. There is a possibility to walk to the top of Hostyn on the blue trail and then on the yellow trail on a longer route, but a gentler climb. We choose the red steeper one, but still nothing terrible.

On this red trail, after a while from the turn off, you go up long stairs and in the distance you can already see the large Basilica of the Assumption. You would be deprived of this view on the blue/yellow marker :)

On the top of Hostýn, there are plenty of pilgrimage stands with church souvenirs and two restaurants where you can refresh yourself before heading back. We tried them and the food neither offends nor delights - they have a great selection of Czech cuisine.

After lunch we walked across the Way of the Cross to the Holy Sepulchre and then on to the Hostýn lookout, where the very top of the mountain is. We also pass the Jurkovič stop on the St. Hostýn Way of the Cross, from which we descend directly down the red trail towards U Revir.

At the Bystřička river, we turn to the yellow sign of the Path of the Fighters for Peace. Follow the yellow sign to the Říčka fork, where we turn off the yellow sign and follow the cycle path back to Bystřice pod Hostýnem.

Difficulty

This trip is not difficult. Although you have to overcome an altitude of about 500 metres. There is no exposed place to be afraid of. You simply walk uphill through the forest and back down again also on forest paths. The hike is also suitable for school-age children or active pensioners.

Water availability

I recommend carrying about 0.5 litres of water per person. This is because there are several refreshments and restaurants at the top of Mount Hostýn, where you can replenish your strength.

Mountain peaks

On the route we will climb only one peak Hostýn 735 m above sea level. From the top you can see the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mountains and the Javorníky Mountains in good weather.

Danger

There is no objective danger on this route. The route of the whole circular trip to Hostýn is quite short and frequented. There is only one slightly steep section, which could be driven with an all-terrain buggy.
