Easy trek to Holy Hill in Mikulov

Starting point

We leave our car in the unpaid parking lot at the flooded quarry Janičův vrch. There is space for about 20 cars. On weekends in good weather you can't park here after 11 am, the place is very popular.

Description of the hike

From the parking lot, follow the blue trail past the flooded Janičov quarry. After a few tens of metres the road turns left and starts to climb slightly. Don't miss the Beetle Park at the beginning of the path - in spring or summer you will definitely see several species of beetles here - for example, the previously unknown to me rhinoceros beetle.

From the Broukoviště, follow the blue trail along the forest path, up a slightly steep hill at the beginning. Soon we are at the viewpoint Pod Boží hrobem (Under God's Grave) - the view is to the south-east towards Austria and Valtice.

From the viewpoint, follow the blue trail to the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. From the chapel we descend 33 steps first to the chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows and then to the large chapel of St. Sebastian. From here you have a beautiful view of the whole town of Mikulov, the place invites you to have a snack in good weather.

After refreshments we descend down the stone steps, still following the blue marker, steeply down to Mikulov. On the way down to Mikulov (or if you are coming out of Mikulov) you will follow the Stations of the Cross past several chapels - all nicely described here on the Mikulov website.

Just before Mikulov, however, we take a shortcut to the green hiking trail and walk up the whole hill from the south side on the loaded trail. We go again through the lookout point Pod Božím hrobem and then back to the car at the flooded quarry Janičův vrch, where we have a car.

Difficulty

The trip is really very simple and easy. It is on forest paths, sometimes on stony clearings. The only steeper descent is towards Mikulov, where it is more about stone steps than anything else.

We managed the route with small children 7 and 9 years old without any problems. The trip is also suitable for pensioners, of which we also met many.

Water availability

We had about a liter of water with us for the whole family in the spring and it was plenty. The possibility to buy refreshments is no more than 1 hour away from any point of the trip.

Mountain peaks

Svatý kopeček above Mikulov is also the name of the peak with a height of 363 m above sea level. It offers beautiful views of the southern part of the Pálava Protected Landscape Area, to which this natural formation near Mikulov still belongs.

Danger

Be careful only on the steep ascent and descent from Mikulov, where there are high stone steps. Although there is a partial wooden railing, it does not help completely and in wet conditions these stone steps can be very slippery. The next danger will be the high overcrowding and the resulting situation :))
