A relaxing hike to the Stoderzinken mountain in Dachstein

Starting point

Parking at the end of the toll road. It leads from Gröbming. The toll costs 15 Euro per car. It is paid on the way back!

Description of the hike

From the car park we walked past the huts and pub and followed the sign to the summit. The trail in this part goes mostly through slash and sparse forest. It is not a significant climb either, instead there are alternating sections of ascent and descent. Eventually we reached the Stoderkircherl chapel, which is already in rocky terrain.

At the chapel there are several options to continue to the summit. There are different difficulty levels of the klettersteig. However, we had no equipment and so we chose the classic route. This is also partially secured with a steel rope, but it is not at all difficult. Basically we just held on to the rope lightly and between the slash and the rock we were above this section in a quarter of an hour. We then followed the trail up to the very top of the Stoderkircherl.

The views were partially obstructed by clouds, but it was still beautiful. After a rest we headed back. The trail leads through a meadow and descends quite steeply. After about 700 hundred metres we turned sharply to the left and descended through the slash and burn back to the Berggasthof Steinerhaus hut and the car park.

Difficulty

Even though a bit of the trail is secured with chains, it is a very easy hike. The vast majority of the route is on mountain paths. Only the section after the chapel is in rocky terrain and there are steel ropes to make the ascent easier. But it is definitely not a klettersteig. These lead from the chapel to the top of Stoderzinken, but by a different route.

Water availability

The pub is right next to the parking lot. Otherwise, there's no spring on the way. But the route is short, just 1.5 liters per person.

Sleeping options

You can stay for example at the Berggasthof Steinerhaus. But in the valley in particular there are plenty of private accommodation options.

Mountain peaks

The route leads to the top of the Stoderzinken mountain 2 048 m above sea level. The views are beautiful, especially of the Dachstein massif or the Schladming Tauern.

Danger

The only section that is slightly challenging is the climb behind the chapel to the top. There is also a steel rope stretched here. However, it is an easy climb between the slash and the rocks. There are no air sections. Even so, it is a good idea to take extra care here. The rest of the route is on mountain paths and is without problems.

Food

The pub is next to the parking - the Berggasthof Steinerhaus. We had our own snacks.
